The Walnut Workhorse

The Gibson J-45 Studio Walnut is a part of Gibson’s top-selling J-45 “Workhorse” line, first introduced in 1942. This round-shoulder dreadnought acoustic guitar is known for its full, balanced expression, its warm bass, and its excellent projection — much of which came through subtle changes to the bracing of its forefather, the J-35. The J-45 Studio Walnut features all that rich tone, thanks to its premium Sitka spruce top and walnut body. Gibson acoustics are famous for flawless playability, and your fingers will fly on this J-45’s walnut fingerboard as you rapidly navigate its Advanced Response mahogany neck.

Known as “The Workhorse,” the Gibson J-45 body style is among Gibson’s most beloved. This particular workhorse features a superb blend of tonewoods, giving you rich, strong sound — day-in, day-out. The J-45 Studio Walnut features a premium Sitka spruce top for presence, while walnut adorns its back and sides. Walnut is a unique-looking tonewood somewhere between maple and walnut in tonality, with a high-frequency clarity similar to koa. It’s a recipe for vibrant tone that will age gracefully as the years go by.

Walnut fingerboard with rolled edges and dot inlays

The Gibson J-45 Studio Walnut’s fingerboard and bridge are made from high-grade walnut, which is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson experts before it even enters the Gibson factories. It’s a resilient and durable wood, making for a balanced and stable tonal foundation that gives every note and chord enhanced clarity and definition. The dot inlays on the J-45 are made of genuine mother-of-pearl, and are added to the fingerboard using a special Gibson process that eliminates gaps and doesn’t require fillers. What’s more, the J-45 Studio Walnut’s fingerboard boasts a rolled edge that’s lightly beveled, which enhances the instrument’s smooth playability.

Gibson's Legendary Round Shoulder style

Descending from Gibson’s large HG Hawaiian guitar in 1929, and the original “Jumbo,” introduced in 1934, Round Shoulder Dreadnoughts are steeped in Gibson tradition and lauded for their pure, rich tone and impressive volume. With smooth lines and a curvaceous shape, Round Shoulder style guitars invite a close relationship with their respective guitarists: their body shape makes these guitars easier to hold and more comfortable to wrap your arms around.

Classic Gibson craftsmanship

Gibson’s reputation as a fine guitar builder dates back to the late 1800s. Handcrafted since day one by highly skilled luthiers, Gibson acoustic guitars have inspired countless players around the world. When you pick up a Gibson acoustic, you know you’re getting the finest tonewoods, quality hardware, and incredible attention to detail — these instruments are built to sound great and stand the test of time. After moving from Kalamazoo, MI, to Nashville, TN (where Gibson electric guitars continue to be made), Gibson finally settled their acoustic operation in Bozeman, MT, where they continue making some of the finest guitars on the planet by hand.

LR Baggs Element Bronze acoustic pickup system

To provide you with a natural sound that faithfully captures the true character of your guitar, Gibson selected LR Baggs’ Element Bronze electronics. The Element Bronze features a low-profile under-saddle transducer with a unique flexible sensing element, which — at only the thickness of a hair — is highly responsive to string vibrations. Unlike other under-saddle pickups, the Element Bronze does not respond to pressure, thereby eliminating the notorious piezo “quack!” Instead, you’re treated to a warm, open, and dynamic amplified acoustic tone with a delicate high end, crisp mids, and focused lows. Now, when you step onstage, you’ll never feel like you’re sacrificing your tone for the convenience of plugging in!
